Leicester fail to pick up points as dominant Arsenal go top of the WSL table

Leicester City lost 4-0 against Arsenal in this afternoon's Barclay's Women's Super League fixture at the King Power Stadium.

There was early drama as Frida Maanum was left in the centre of the box after just 12 minutes played to put Arsenal in front, scoring her fourth goal in five games.

Caitlin Foord doubled Arsenal's lead just ten minutes later from Beth Mead's cross before Stephanie Catley's corner curled straight into the back of the net to make it three for Arsenal before half-time.

Less than five minutes into the second-half, Stina Blackstenius strike secured Arsenal's sixth win in six games.

In the 12th minute, Kirstie Levell spilled the cross out to Maanum who was left free in the centre of the box and put the ball into the empty net, no Leicester players reacted or make a challenge on her. Arsenal broke forward in the 22nd minute, as Beth Mead put the cross in for Foord to tap-in at the back post. CJ Bott went through on goal for Leicester, almost one on one with goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, but the Arsenal keeper saved it with her foot. Around 10 minutes from half-time Arsenal claimed their third goal, a corner from the right swung in by Catley, it went straight over Levell's head and into the net. Three minutes from half-time, CJ Bott was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Wienroither. The half ended 3-0 with Arsenal dominating play.

Just three minutes into the second-half and Blackstenius made it four, the Swedish forward beat all the Leicester defenders and made it through one on one with Levell and put the ball round her and into the Foxes' net. 20 minutes after the goal Leicester made their first change: Molly Pike on for Abbie McManus. A few minutes later, Leicester made three more substitutions: Jemma Purfield, Natasha Flint and Erin Simon off, they are replaced by Missy Goodwin, Molly Pike and Shannon O'Brien. O'Brien capitalised off an Arsenal mistake and drives forward but failed to find the target. Leicester started to get the ball in higher positions, looking more comfortable in possession and had some good opportunities going forward. Goodwin cut inside and her strike from just outside of the box was fired straight at the keeper, who had to tip her effort over the bar. The match finished 4-0 to a very dominant Arsenal side.

Standings

City remain bottom of the table with no points picked up so far, they still remain three points off Liverpool and Reading. Brighton's win against West Ham takes them six points away from Leicester.
